Palma has a reputation problem.
Mention Palma de Mallorca and people tend to picture the same things: crowded beaches, all-inclusive summer resorts and the slightly chaotic nightlife of nearby Magaluf. In reality, the island’s capital is something far more sophisticated , particularly once summer fades.
Visit Palma in winter and the city reveals a completely different personality. The light becomes softer, the boulevards quieter, and the pace refreshingly civilised. Temperatures hover around 18–20°C, which means you can wander the old town in a light jacket, sit outside for lunch in the sun and enjoy the city without the summer crowds that normally define Mallorca.
But winter Palma only truly works if you choose the right hotel.
Hidden discreetly in the old town, Palma Riad is exactly the sort of place that makes a winter escape feel cinematic. Romantic, atmospheric and wonderfully indulgent. And after a few days here, it’s easy to understand why many travellers quietly consider it the most enchanting boutique hotel in Palma.
Finding Palma Riad Feels Like Discovering a Secret
Part of the hotel’s charm is how discreet it is.
You arrive via Carrer Sant Jaume, a narrow street just moments from Palma’s elegant shopping boulevard, Passeig del Born. The entrance is understated; a simple doorway tucked between historic stone buildings; and if you weren’t looking for it, you might walk straight past.
The lobby feels less like a hotel reception and more like the entrance to an opulent riad somewhere in Marrakech. Deep velvet curtains frame tall windows, chandeliers hang low above lacquered tables and golden parrot-shaped lamps glow softly in corners. The air carries a subtle scent from the hotel’s signature candles, which seems to follow you gently from room to room.
Designed by Barcelona-based interior designer Pablo Peyra, the space draws heavily from Moroccan riads while subtly referencing Mallorca’s Moorish past; the island was under Arab rule between the 10th and 13th centuries. The result is rich, sensual and slightly theatrical, yet it never crosses the line into excess.
On my arrival, the atmosphere was calm and intimate. A couple were quietly enjoying cocktails in the bar, a staff member appeared almost instantly with a warm welcome, and within minutes I had the distinct feeling that I had stumbled upon somewhere genuinely special.
Just Eleven Suites; and All the Better for It

Palma Riad has only eleven suites, which is one of the reasons the experience feels so personal.
Large hotels can be impressive, but there is something uniquely appealing about a place where staff remember your name by the second day and where the corridors are so quiet you sometimes feel as if you have the whole property to yourself. My suite was a perfect reflection of the hotel’s design philosophy: rich, atmospheric and deeply romantic.
At its centre was a dramatic four-poster bed, draped in soft fabrics and positioned beneath warm, flattering lighting that made the entire room feel instantly cosy. Oversized mirrors reflected the glow of the lamps, while lacquered furniture added just the right level of glamour.
One feature I didn’t expect, and ended up loving, was the fireplace.
Palma’s winters are mild, but the evenings still carry a slight chill. Returning to the room after dinner, lighting the fire and settling into the sofa with a glass of wine felt wonderfully indulgent. It created exactly the kind of atmosphere you want from a winter city break: intimate, relaxed and slightly decadent.
The bathroom felt almost theatrical in scale. The hammam-style bath, tiled in beautiful mosaic, was enormous, easily large enough for two people and paired with a spacious double shower. After spending the afternoon walking through Palma’s old town streets, sinking into that bath felt like a small ritual worth repeating every evening.
Little details made the suite even more enjoyable: mirrors that doubled as televisions, GHD styling tools neatly arranged on the dressing table, and excellent lighting options that could shift the mood of the room instantly. It was one of those hotel rooms you genuinely look forward to returning to at the end of the day.
Mornings in the Courtyard

One of my favourite moments each day happened before leaving the hotel.
Breakfast is served in Palma Riad’s courtyard; a tranquil space centred around a small fountain that gently trickles in the background. Palm leaves and stone walls surround the tables, creating a pocket of calm that feels completely removed from the city outside.
On my first morning I lingered there far longer than planned. The winter sun had just started warming the courtyard, coffee arrived strong and hot, and breakfast included fresh fruit, pastries, local cheeses and excellent Iberico ham.
The Rooftop: Palma at Golden Hour
The rooftop terrace quickly became my favourite spot in the hotel. From here you can see the rooftops of Palma stretching out towards the dramatic Gothic silhouette of Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca, which rises above the city like a stone ship.
One evening I brought a cocktail upstairs just before sunset. The sky shifted from pale gold to soft pink while the cathedral slowly darkened against the horizon. There were only two other guests on the terrace, both quietly enjoying the view. Moments like that are exactly why Palma works so well in winter. In summer, a rooftop like this would be full of people. In January, it feels almost private.
One of Palma’s Most Stylish Cocktail Bars

Back on the ground floor, Palma Riad’s cocktail bar deserves special mention. Even if you weren’t staying at the hotel, it would still be worth visiting.
The bar has the same lush aesthetic as the rest of the property; velvet seating, low lighting, polished wood surfaces; and attracts a stylish mix of hotel guests and locals. The bartenders take cocktails seriously.
During my stay I ended up returning to the bar most evenings before dinner. It quickly became a comfortable ritual: one drink, a little conversation with the staff, and then a short walk through Palma’s lantern-lit streets to whichever restaurant had been recommended that day.
Palma Riade Restaurant: Mediterranean with Flair
The hotel’s restaurant, Palma Riade, leans towards Mediterranean cuisine with a few international touches.
What stands out most is the quality of ingredients. The Iberico ham is exceptional, served thinly sliced and rich with flavour. Fresh fish appears daily: on my visit it included beautifully cooked John Dory and turbot, both prepared simply to let the ingredients shine.
Service is overseen by Alessandro, a charismatic maître d’ who previously worked at London institutions like Barrafina and Harrods. His knowledge of the island’s food scene proved invaluable, and several of the best restaurants I visited in Palma were recommendations from him.
The Perfect Base for Exploring Palma in Winter
Staying at Palma Riad places you right in the centre of everything.
Within minutes you can reach Passeig del Born, Palma’s most elegant boulevard lined with designer boutiques and cafés. The streets surrounding it hide vintage stores, artisan shops and independent fashion boutiques that are far easier to explore once the summer crowds disappear.
The city’s cultural highlights are also nearby. The vast Gothic interior of Palma Cathedral is just a ten-minute walk away, while the contemporary art museum Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art offers impressive exhibitions overlooking the sea.
A short taxi ride brings you to the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, which houses thousands of works by the artist who spent decades living on the island.
Yet one of the greatest pleasures of winter Palma is simply wandering. Without the summer crowds, the city feels wonderfully relaxed, and every street seems to reveal another café, gallery or small restaurant.
The Verdict: Palma’s Most Romantic Boutique Hotel

Palma Riad is not trying to be minimal, modern or understated.
Instead it embraces romance, atmosphere and just the right amount of theatrical glamour. And in a city increasingly filled with contemporary boutique hotels, that confidence makes it stand out even more.
For a winter city break, it is hard to imagine a better setting. The intimate scale, the seductive interiors, the rooftop sunsets and the unbeatable location in Palma’s historic centre all combine to create something genuinely memorable.
If Palma in winter is a discovery, Palma Riad is the place that makes you fall in love with it
