There’s never a bad time for afternoon tea, but the weeks from now until New Year are when it’s at its best. The chandeliers come out, the patisserie chefs swap summer berries for clementine and spice, and suddenly a Tuesday at 3pm with a pot of Darjeeling looks like a very sensible plan.
The trouble is the choice. Every grand hotel, country estate and tea emporium in the country has a new menu, a theme or a festive takeover, and most of them want your Saturday afternoon. How do you pick between a Michelin-starred croissant, a spy-themed tea in the old War Office and Santa doing magic tricks in a Welsh ballroom?
We’ve done the eating for you (it’s a tough job, etc.). From London’s palace hotels to a Victorian post office in Cardiff and a clifftop in Pembrokeshire, these are the afternoon teas worth booking now.

How we chose
Our editors looked for afternoon teas that are worth the journey: a strong setting, cooking that goes beyond the standard sandwich-scone-cake routine, good tea, and service that makes the afternoon feel like an occasion. We’ve mixed London’s big names with destinations around the country, and we’ll keep this list updated as the seasonal menus change.
The London icons
La Croissanterie Afternoon Tea, Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane

Best for: Croissant obsessives with Michelin taste
Price: £95 per person
Address: Hamilton Place, London W1J 7DR
Why we love it: Leave it to the French to improve a British tradition. Yannick Alléno, who holds more Michelin stars than any other chef alive, has built a whole afternoon tea around the croissant, and it’s every bit as good as that sounds. It’s served in the Lounge at Pavyllon London, and the savoury tier opens with a mini lobster croissant (don’t miss it), followed by truffle, Comté and turkey ham sandwiches and coronation chicken with mango pickle.
The signature sweet croissant, filled with vanilla mascarpone, croissant praline and chocolate namelaka, is pure Mayfair indulgence. The So British scones get orange marmalade alongside the strawberry jam. More than 20 single-garden teas from JING are on the list (try the Yunnan White Peony), and tea and coffee are bottomless. It’s served Friday to Sunday only, 2.30pm to 4.30pm, so book ahead.
The Drawing Room, Raffles London at The OWO

Best for: Tea with a side of state secrets
Price: From £95 per person
Address: 57 Whitehall, London SW1A 2BX
Why we love it: Where else can you eat finger sandwiches where Churchill once worked? The old War Office is now one of London’s most glamorous hotels, and the Drawing Room’s spy-themed tea, made with the West End hit Operation Mincemeat, has a playful streak that suits the building perfectly. LA LISTE named it the World’s Best Afternoon Tea for 2026. Hear, hear.
It’s also a real treat for tea lovers. There are more than 100 teas on the menu, including jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearls and the hotel’s own rose-petal afternoon blend. From mid-November the festive menu takes over, so if you want the spies, go soon.
Claridge’s

Best for: The timeless classic
Price: From £95 per person
Address: 49 Brook Street, London W1K 4HR
Why we love it: Come on, it’s Claridge’s! Tea is served in the art deco Foyer & Reading Room, and it’s the polished, unhurried kind of service that other hotels try to copy. The scones arrive warm, with Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream and the hotel’s own jam, and the pastries change with the seasons.
At Christmas it goes all out. The festive tea comes with a Claridge’s Christmas pudding, and if last year is anything to go by, a children’s choir sings on weekends in the run-up to Christmas Eve. We dare you not to feel festive. The alcohol-free Wild Idol is a lovely alternative to the champagne.
The Peninsula London

Best for: Tea with live music
Price: £95 per person, including a glass of English sparkling wine or sparkling Darjeeling tea
Address: 1 Grosvenor Place, London SW1X 7HJ
Why we love it: Peninsula hotels have made afternoon tea famous all over the world, and the London Lobby is the tradition’s homecoming. Look up: the coffered ceiling and the hand-painted De Gournay murals of the Royal Parks are by Peter Marino. Live jazz and classical music play from the gallery above.
The tea list is serious (Da Hong Pao oolong, Silver Needle, the house Flower Bouquet tisane), and the savouries have featured treats like caviar-topped tuna tartare. Ask for the Saicho sparkling Darjeeling instead of the fizz. It’s elegant, alcohol-free and suits the room perfectly. Come December, there’s a festive menu, and part of the price goes to charity.
Festive Afternoon Tea, The Landmark London

Best for: Christmas under glass
Price: £110 per person (with a glass of Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut), £120 with the rosé
Address: 222 Marylebone Road, London NW1 6JQ
Why we love it: The Winter Garden is one of London’s most dramatic rooms: an eight-storey glass atrium full of palm trees, which looks even better when the Christmas decorations go up. The festive menu starts with candied fruit scones and clotted cream, then the patisserie arrives: cranberry and cream yule logs, chocolate hazelnut Christmas baubles and a Cointreau orange semolina cake.
It runs from 25 November to 3 January. Book a weekend slot (from 1pm) if you want to linger, because you’ll want to.
Kensington and beyond
Festive Afternoon Tea, The Milestone Hotel

Best for: A cosy townhouse Christmas
Price: £90 per person, £45 per child
Address: 1 Kensington Court, London W8 5DL
Why we love it: The Milestone is a Kensington townhouse hotel that feels like being a guest at a very well-run private home. Its festive tea is three tiers of Christmas thinking at its best. The savouries include turkey and sage stuffing with toasted pecans, a crayfish and prawn Marie Rose tartlet, and whipped goat’s curd with clementine and cranberry chutney.
There are cranberry scones alongside the plain ones, then cinnamon and caramelised pear choux, spiced clementine and almond tart, and a tonka bean and caramel layer cake. Delectable. It runs from 30 November to 4 January, and a children’s version means the whole family can come.
Christmas Afternoon Tea, Origin Kensington at Royal Garden Hotel
Best for: Park views on a budget
Price: £45 per person, £25 per child
Address: Royal Garden Hotel, 2-24 Kensington High Street, London W8 4PT
Why we love it: Overlooking Kensington Gardens, Origin’s two AA Rosette kitchen serves one of the best-value festive teas in town. The smoked salmon sandwiches come with caviar and dill cream cheese, a venison and pork sausage roll arrives warm, and the sweets are a delight: a matcha and raspberry Christmas tree tart, a white chocolate and rosemary macaron with a lime centre, and a dark chocolate and hazelnut “gift”. It’s served Thursday to Sunday, 3 to 24 December only, and there’s a plant-based children’s menu too.
‘Phantom of the Opera’ Afternoon Tea, Mariage Frères Covent Garden
Best for: Tea purists before a show
Address: Covent Garden, London
Why we love it: A short walk from Theatreland, Mariage Frères’ Covent Garden home spans three floors, with a tea library, a small tea museum and a tearoom. It’s the most Parisian place in London to take tea. The new afternoon tea, launched on 19 October, is a gothic tribute to the Phantom of the Opera and the Paris Opera House beneath which he lives.
Expect white, black, green and blue teas served alongside sweet and savoury bites with plenty of French flair. Book for 3pm before an evening show, and leave time to pick up the Christmas Rhapsody advent calendar (£49) on your way out.
Enchanted Treehouse Tea, Richmond Hill Hotel

Best for: A storybook afternoon
Price: £46 per adult, £16 per child
Address: 144-148 Richmond Hill, Richmond TW10 6RW
Why we love it: Readers of the Muddy Stilettos guide voted this London’s best afternoon tea for 2026, and it isn’t hard to see why. Inspired by Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree, it’s served in the hotel’s elegant Georgian lounge at the top of Richmond Hill, with the Thames and Richmond Park just outside. The menu is wonderfully unexpected: chicken mousse with tarragon in a charcoal tartlet, fig frangipane with mascarpone cream.
Go this weekend and you’ll catch the Haunted Treehouse version, dressed up for Halloween until 1 November. Afterwards, take a walk in the park to see the deer. You’ll have earned it.
Country house escapes
Festive Afternoon Tea, Down Hall Hotel, Spa & Estate

Best for: A country house Christmas outside London
Price: £55 per adult, £27.50 per child
Address: Matching Road, Hatfield Heath, Essex CM22 7AS
Why we love it: Down Hall goes all out at Christmas. The interiors are lavishly decorated and there’s a different afternoon tea for every mood. The Festive Afternoon Tea runs daily until 28 December, with roast turkey, cranberry and stuffing sandwiches and a gingerbread and white chocolate choux. Children get a green apple and vanilla mousse Christmas tree at the Afternoon Tea with Santa.
There’s more, too. On 28 November, the Christmas Jazz Afternoon Tea (£67.50) brings live swing from Fox, Wiggle and Sass. On 8 November, a Jo Malone London-inspired tea (£79) turns the brand’s perfumes into patisserie: think vanilla scotch tart, and ginger, hazelnut and tonka choux. You also go home with a scented gift and a £20 Jo Malone voucher. What’s not to love?
Festive Afternoon Tea, Fairmont Cheshire, The Mere

Best for: A northern country estate escape
Price: £55 per person
Address: Mere, Knutsford, Cheshire
Why we love it: Set in 157 acres of Cheshire countryside, this five-star resort serves its festive tea in The Orangery, a light-filled space that’s lovely on a crisp winter afternoon. It’s classic in the best way: dainty finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and pastries full of Christmas flavours, with a glass of champagne included. It runs from 27 November to 31 December (closed Christmas Day). Make a day of it with a walk around the grounds first.
Wizarding Afternoon Tea, The Grand, York

Best for: Little sorcerers (and big ones)
Price: From £42.50 per adult, £26.50 per child
Address: Station Rise, York YO1 6GD
Why we love it: York’s cobbled lanes already feel straight out of a storybook, so this spellbinding tea fits right in. The Grand’s grown-up version has real culinary ambition: coronation chicken with a miso-maple butter and pickled heritage carrots, and The Grand Talisman, a cinnamon doughnut with mascarpone-honey chantilly. A separate children’s menu keeps younger witches and wizards happy. It’s a brilliant excuse for a winter weekend in York. No, really.
Wales, wonderfully
Festive Afternoon Tea, The Parkgate Hotel

Best for: Victorian glamour in Cardiff
Price: From £42 per person
Address: Westgate Street, Cardiff (next to the Principality Stadium)
Why we love it: Afternoon tea in a post office? Trust us. The Parkgate is housed in Cardiff’s former Head Post Office, which opened in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Where letters and brown-paper parcels were once sorted, there are now glittering chandeliers and plush leather sofas. It was named AA Hotel of the Year for Wales 2024-25, and there’s a rooftop spa if you want to make an afternoon of it.
The festive tea is properly Welsh, starting with Welsh rarebit croquettes and a Welsh pork and apple sausage roll with homemade brown sauce. Then come vanilla and sultana scones with cinnamon sugar, a white chocolate and orange snowball tart, and a Santa macaron. It runs from 30 November to 31 December, served from 12pm to 3pm, for a maximum of six per table.
Santa’s Tea Party, Celtic Manor Resort

Best for: Families who want the full Christmas magic
Price: From £38 per adult, £28 per child
Address: Usk Valley, Newport, South Wales
Why we love it: Nowhere does a family Christmas quite like Celtic Manor. For this tea, the ballroom becomes a festive wonderland. There’s afternoon tea, a visit from Santa, a magician doing close-up tricks at your table and a family disco to finish. The menu suits all ages, with turkey, bacon and cranberry tarts and smoked salmon crêpe roulades for the adults, plus Santa cupcakes, Rudolph’s chocolate brownie and a penguin macaron for everyone else.
Children’s tickets include a trip to Santa’s grotto and a surprise gift to take home. It runs from 6 to 24 December, and it’ll sell out.
Festive Afternoon Tea, St Brides Spa Hotel

Best for: Christmas by the sea
Price: From £30 per person
Address: Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire
Why we love it: Afternoon tea with a sea view in December? Yes please. The Cliff Restaurant at this clifftop spa hotel looks out over Saundersfoot Harbour, its sandy beach and Carmarthen Bay, and the two AA Rosette kitchen cooks with local produce. The festive menu includes turkey, stuffing and cranberry sliders, smoked salmon with horseradish cream cheese, and a bûche de Noël with black cherries. Book a spa treatment first and you have the perfect winter day. It runs from 30 November to 31 December.
